Using air dryers, not lowering the risk when pulling the chain, not washing our hands or using toilet paper incorrectly are the 4 most common mistakes we make when we go to the bathroom.

That the hygiene of some public toilets leaves much to be desired is no secret. In this article we explained how cleaning and disinfection should be in these spaces.

Even so, on certain occasions, the fact of having a better or worse experience in the bathroom is in our hands.

And, we have internalized some actions that, without realizing it, put our health at risk.

Nextly, we list the 4 most common mistakes we make when go to the bathroom as below:

Dry hands with air dryers
Use toilet paper to dry your hands
Do not lower the toilet lid when we pull the chain
Do not wash your hands

Dry hands with air dryers
In previous articles we referred to a study by the University of Westminster that claimed that hot air dryers increased bacterial contamination by 254% (for cold air dryers the figure was 54%).

And these devices drive germs and make them pollute the environment.

Dryers in which it is necessary to introduce the hands are considered especially dangerous, since a container effect is formed in which the germs accumulate inside.

As an alternative to air dryers, the use of paper towels is recommended. According to the mentioned study, with this system it is possible to reduce bacterial contamination by up to 77%.

Use toilet paper to dry your hands

Some bacteria such as enterococci, for example, can have a great presence in the baths, as these are the causes of various intestinal disorders.

With this in mind, now let’s think about how many times we have dried our hands with toilet paper because there was no hand dryer or because the dryer did not work.

Or how many times we have blown our nose dispensing the paper of the same dispenser that we use when we go to the bathroom.

This action, which a priori, may seem normal to us, is really dangerous if there is a presence of intestinal bacteria.

That is why we recommend avoiding at all costs the use of toilet paper for purposes other than your own.

Do not lower the toilet lid when we pull the chain

Making use of the cistern and not lowering the toilet lid previously is something more common than we think.

Are we really aware of the consequences of this action? A biology doctor did an experiment with Petri dishes to prove it.

The result: If we keep the lid up while pulling the chain, the amount of bacteria that are fired per square meter is 10,000.

These bacteria, in turn, usually sit on the floor or on the walls and, in case of not performing a correct cleaning and disinfection, pose a risk to our health.

The solution is very simple: keep the lid down while pulling the tank.

Do not wash your hands

As incredible as it may seem to us and as much as we think we all perform the act of washing our hands correctly, this is not the case.

If we rely on the study developed by the Jornal of Environmental Health we can verify that of the total of 4,000 participants (all of them with easy access to everything needed to wash their hands) only 5% of individuals wash their hands correctly.

As data to highlight the study, 10% of participants said they did not wash their hands after using the bathroom and 33% said they “washed” their hands without using soap.

Washing our hands greatly reduces the risk of infections. In this infographic you can consult the necessary steps to wash your hands.

And remember that automatic dispensers and drying of hands with paper provides extra hygiene to the process.

To understand the goal of hand hygiene it is essential to know the normal characteristics of the skin.

The skin is normally colonized, and different areas of skin have different rates of bacterial colonies measured as: cfu / cm2; In the RN the areas of greatest colonization are: perineal-inguinal, umbilical, axillary, cervical, and lower limbs. In contrast, health workers are hands.

It was only in 1938, that the skin flora was categorized into:

FLORA TRANSITORIA: recently acquired (pollution); These bacteria can be acquired from colonized patients: E. coli, Cocos (+) MR, Candidas, MR Enterococci and Gram Bacilli (-) MR. They usually survive a limited period of time and are located in the superficial layers, for which they can be removed with hand washing by mechanical drag. It is more frequently associated with cross infection.

RESIDENT FLORA: they are persistent or permanent microorganisms in the skin of most people, include Staphylococcus C (-), corinebacterium, Diphteroids, these survive and multiply in deep layers. On some occasions Staphilococcus Aureus or Candidas spp are incorporated when the skin is injured, being difficult to eradicate and becoming an important source of contamination and transmission.

The skin is a dynamic structure with three important functions: a) reduce water loss, b) the body’s first protective barrier against infections and abrasions and c) act as a permeable barrier.

Its structure in premature RNs is not fully developed; in them we observe that the stratum corneum does not exist or is limited to 1 or 2 cell layers, preventing it from fulfilling the first two functions; the epidermis is thin and easily exposed to lacerations and irritating substances that alter its weak integrity; Only the dermis and the hypodermis are better developed in them.

The alteration of the integrity can be of nutritional cause, by disruption (puncture-laceration), by extraction of lipids and corneal layer (acetone-adhesives) or by irritating chemical substances (solvents-detergents); Not only does it affect the RN but also the personnel who sanitize their hands frequently and their normalization requires from 6 hours to 7 days.

People not washing their hands after going to the toilet, rather than undercooked meat, is behind the spread of a key strain of E. coli.

That’s according to a new study published in Lancet: Infectious Diseases. In it, a team analysed 20,000 human faecal samples and 300 blood samples plus hundreds of sewage samples, animal slurry and meats including beef, pork and chicken – as well fruit and salad.

One strain – ST131 – was seen in the majority of human samples from all three sources. It is found in the gut but can, usually via urinary tract infections, cause serious infections.

However, the strains found in meat, cattle and animal slurry were mostly different.

Prof David Livermore, from the University of East Anglia’s Norwich Medical School, who led the research, said: “Critically – there’s little crossover between strains from humans, chickens and cattle.
“Rather – and unpalatably – the likeliest route of transmission for ESBL-E.coli is directly from human to human, with faecal particles from one person reaching the mouth of another.”

He said maintaining food hygiene was still important – people should handle raw meat carefully, not least because there are other strains of food poisoning bacteria that come through the food chain.
But he added: “Here – in the case of ESBL-E.coli – it’s much more important to wash your hands after going to the toilet.

“It’s particularly important to have good hygiene in care homes, as most of the severe E.coli infections occur among the elderly, and people may need help going to the toilet.”

Since 2008, World Handwashing Day is celebrated annually every October 15. 2008 was also designated by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Year of Sanitation.

Since then, World Handwashing Day aims to extend the best hygiene practices to the entire planet. The practice of washing your hands is common in most parts of the world, but soap is rarely used after critical moments (after using the toilet, cleaning a child’s stool or before handling food).

Handwashing with soap is one of the most effective and economical ways to prevent diarrheal and respiratory diseases, which are responsible for ensuring that every year more than 3 million children do not reach 5 years of life. Every 20 seconds, a child dies as a result of poor sanitation, that means 1.5 million deaths a year that could be prevented. According to WHO, washing hands with soap and water would reduce the risk of acute diarrheal diseases by 47 percent.

Incorporating the practice of handwashing with soap in every home in the world could save more lives than any medical intervention. Declaring October 15 as World Handwashing Day also has as another key objective to ensure access to sanitation and drinking water sources throughout the world.

A gesture as simple as washing your hands with soap and water can be key to the survival of millions of people, especially the little ones. Children are especially vulnerable to the effects of diarrhea and respiratory infections, diseases that can be easily and cheaply prevented with a little soap and water. This day wants to serve as a reminder of the importance of this practice.

Equitable access to hygiene facilities that allow us to wash our hands with soap helps us build a better future as we move towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Today we celebrate World Handwashing Day, but it is a call to practice it every day; We have a great challenge in converting an idea that is often abstract in an internalized and conscious behavior in homes, schools and communities around the world.

Aspects we should all know about hand washing

Washing your hands only with water is not enough, it is a widespread practice worldwide, but it is much less effective than doing so using soap. The soap favors rubbing, gives off a smell and produces a pleasant sensation that encourages its use.

Different medical studies have confirmed that washing your hands with soap is an effective way to prevent disease transmission even in impoverished settlements with high levels of pollution. Skin or eye infections, intestinal parasites, different types of flu and even a health improvement for people with HIV / AIDS are possible with proper hand washing.

There are critical times of the day when it is mandatory to wash your hands with soap: after using the bathroom, when coming into contact with feces or before handling food. The hands are the main carriers of germs that cause disease.

Washing your hands is the most effective and cheap health or hygiene intervention in the world.

A final key aspect of World Handwashing Day is to turn children into “handwash ambassadors” nationwide in all countries. Involving children in these activities can be a real factor of change to absolutely establish this practice worldwide.

2008 is the International Year of Sanitation, which was established by the UN General Assembly. It promotes the “Global Handwashing Day” initiative launched by the PPP Washing Public-Private Partnership (PPPHW), calling on countries around the world to start soaping activities on October 15 each year from 2008.

The event aims to develop and support a global and regional culture of washing hands with soap, paying attention to hand washing in various countries and increasing the promotion of the benefits of hand washing with soap or hand soap. As one of the sponsors of Global Handwashing Day, UNICEF actively promotes child-to-child hand washing campaigns through its offices around the world, calling on people to use action to wake everyone up to wash their hands properly, using soap or hand soap.

Washing hands, preventing disease health awareness; motivating people to improve their health behaviors, especially teaching children to develop good health attitudes and habits from childhood; advocating government and community to improve environmental sanitation, including hand washing facilities.

The meaning of washing your hands with soap or hand soap

Pneumonia and diarrhea are the leading causes of death among children under five. Every year, more than 3.5 million children worldwide are unable to celebrate their 5th birthday because of diarrhoea and pneumonia. Washing hands with soap can save millions of children. Hand washing can also prevent skin infections, eye infections, intestinal parasitic diseases, SARS and avian flu, and is beneficial to the health of cancer patients and people living with HIV.
Washing hands with soap is a life-saving intervention that is accessible to all countries and communities, both technically and economically. Advance this measure not only because it is good for health, but also because washing hands with soap makes people feel comfortable, can reflect a person’s social status and education, and washing hands can make people closer to each other.

Correct hand washing points

With regard to hand washing and advocating hand washing, the following 5 points need to be kept in mind.

1. Washing hands with water is not enough to wash bacteria
Washing hands with water only is a common practice in the world, and the efficiency is far lower than washing hands with soap or hand soap. Proper hand washing requires soap or hand soap and only a small amount of water. Use soap or hand soap to destroy the grease and dirt that carries most of the bacteria on your hands, and remove them by adding water. All soaps or hand sanitizers are equally effective at removing pathogenic bacteria as long as they are used correctly.

2. Washing your hands with soap or hand soap can help prevent a variety of germs that threaten children’s lives.
Washing hands with soap is one of the most effective ways to prevent diarrhoeal diseases and pneumonia, which are the leading causes of child death. Every year, more than 3.5 million children are unable to celebrate their 5th birthday because of diarrhoea and pneumonia. Hand washing can also prevent skin infections, eye infections, intestinal parasites, SARS and bird flu, and is beneficial to the health of people living with HIV and AIDS. Studies have shown that hand washing can effectively prevent the spread of disease, even in overcrowded, highly polluted slum environments.

3. The key moments of hand washing include: after going to the toilet, after cleaning the butt and cleaning the food
You must wash your hands after going to the toilet, cleaning your butt (or other human feces, including babies and children), and before touching any food. The hand is the main carrier of pathogenic bacteria. It is important to ensure that people can wash their hands in any way at these critical moments. Simple, inexpensive methods, such as tilting faucets (or drip taps), and even the poorest communities can be achieved economically and technically.

4. Proper hand washing is the cheapest and simplest health intervention
Hand washing is the cheapest compared to other commonly used long-term health interventions. The health benefit of investing $3.35 for hand washing is equivalent to investing $11 for toilet construction, which is equivalent to investing $200 for household water supply, equivalent to investing thousands of dollars for immunization programs. Investing in soaping hands can also increase the health benefits of investing in water and sanitation, and reduce health risks when families do not have basic sanitation and water services. Cost is not a barrier to hand washing. Almost all households in the world have soap, but they are usually used only for laundry, washing dishes, bathing, not washing their hands.

5. Children will be the messengers of change
When sharing good health practices, as a part of society, children are often the most powerful and enthusiastic group, and are willing to accept new things. After learning in the school’s “handwashing class”, they return to their homes and communities to become behavioral changes. Promoter. The active participation of children (ideally, where children are located at the intersection of families, schools, and communities), when combined with culturally-friendly (sensitive) community-based interventions, ensures sustainable behavioral change. The goal of Global Handwashing Day is to motivate children to receive and share correct handwashing practices, placing them as “handwashing ambassadors” at the heart of national and local activities.

The correct method of hand washing requires everyone to master and practice it. Only every family, every school, every community, the whole country and the whole world can adhere to the correct method of hand washing and develop good hand washing habits. Its social health benefits can be reflected, and “Global Handwashing Day” will be “not just a commemorative day!”

October 15th is World Handwashing Day. Some people will think, “Where there is so much attention to washing your hands, just put it under the faucet.” Although we wash our hands every day, most people don’t know how to wash their hands properly and scientifically, even “washing more dirty” . Are you really doing the right thing to wash your hands? Come and find out the right way to wash your hands.

Studies have shown that proper hand washing can effectively prevent the spread of disease. Autumn and winter seasons are high seasons for a variety of infectious diseases, and the prevention of these diseases can be effectively prevented by strengthening hand hygiene.

What should I pay attention to when washing my hands properly?

Always use running water when washing your hands. Do not use basin water. It takes at least 15 seconds to wash your hands. You can’t just wash your hands with water. Use soap or hand soap to remove pathogens. In addition, the soap should be kept dry during use, and the soap box should be cleaned in time. If the bottom of the box can not be kept dry, bacteria will also grow in a humid environment. In addition, it should be noted that many people share the soap and are not hygienic.

Misunderstanding of hand washing

Myth 1: All hand sanitizers can be sterilized

Hand sanitizers are mainly classified into common type and antibacterial type, so not all hand sanitizers have a bactericidal effect. In the antibacterial and germicidal hand sanitizer, the antibacterial type has a bactericidal effect, but the sterilization rate is relatively low, generally more than 90% can be labeled as an antibacterial effect, and the bactericidal hand sanitizer requires a sterilization rate of 99.99% for the target bacteria.

Myth 2: Wash hands with disposable hand sanitizer

With a disposable hand sanitizer, there will always be substances left on the surface of the hand, so use them as little as possible. It is best to wash your hands with running water and soap. In addition, many people use the “saving” wipes instead of washing their hands before eating. Experts pointed out that wet wipes can not replace hand washing, how to wipe the wet wipes repeatedly, and can not remove bacteria on the surface of the skin.

Myth 3: The more you use the hand sanitizer, the better.

Many people are afraid that they can’t be cleaned, so press a lot of hand sanitizer on the hand and wash it hard. In fact, such deep cleaning can damage the skin, so that the skin not only can not retain moisture, but also easier to invade the bacteria.

Myth 4: Wash your hands with a wash basin

Many people think that washing hands with a wash basin can also wash your hands. In fact, after repeated washing, the water in the wash basin is dirty. Wash your hands with dirty water, your hands are still dirty, and you won’t be able to wash your hands. Even many people use a basin of water to wash their hands, and the degree of contamination is even more serious.

Myth 5: Dry your hands with a towel after washing your hands

Dry hands or dry with a disposable paper towel after washing hands. It is best not to use a towel, because the towel is easy to hide the germs, it is easy to make the washed hands contaminated with germs, not to use public towels.

Misunderstanding 6: Do not wash your clothes after drying your clothes

Dirty clothes and bacteria in the washing machine will be contaminated on the clothes during the washing process. During the process of drying clothes, the hands are likely to be stained with these bacteria. After the clothes are exposed to ultraviolet rays, they can eventually achieve the purpose of disinfection, but the hands are often ignored.

Seven steps to properly wash your hands

The first step: wash your palms. Moisten your hands with water, apply hand sanitizer (or soap), palms, and close your fingers.

Step 2: Wash the back side finger joints. The palms of the hands are rubbed against each other along the back of the fingers, and the hands are exchanged.

The third step: wash the palm side finger joints. The palms are opposite, and the hands cross each other along the fingers.

Step 4: Wash your fingers. Bend each finger joint, and put the back of the finger in the palm of the other hand and rotate it with both hands.

Step 5: Wash your thumb. With one hand holding the other hand, the thumb is rotated and the hands are exchanged.

Step 6: Wash your fingertips. Bend each finger joint, close the fingertips and rotate it in the palm of the other hand, and exchange the hands.

Step 7: Wash your wrists and arms, rub wrist, arm, hands exchange.

Under what circumstances should I wash my hands?

1. Prepare food and contact with raw meat;

2, before meals (feeding), before taking medicine;

3. After contacting the coins;

4. After contacting others, especially after going to the hospital or after contacting the patient (before);

5. After the cleaning work is completed, the garbage is disposed of;

6, outdoor sports, homework, after shopping;

7. After the outdoor play is contaminated with dirty things;

8. After contact with blood, tears, sputum, sputum and saliva;

9. Before holding a child, especially those who have been exposed to infectious materials, they must be disinfected and washed repeatedly;

10. After touching the pet.

Bogotá D.C., May 5, 2019. – Within the framework of World Hand Hygiene Day, the Central Military Hospital committed to biosecurity sensitized the medical, administrative and users of the Institution in a practical way on how to clean their hands.

With this action, which does not take more than a minute, intrahospital infections can be reduced by up to 50%, the spread of existing bacteria in the environment is prevented and the early recovery of hospitalized patients and people with Acute Respiratory Infections is contributed (GO TO).

As explained by the Department of Epidemiology and Prevention of Infectious Diseases of the Central Military Hospital, washing your hands at the right time can save lives. This is confirmed by the World Health Organization -OMS-, which ensures in recent years, this measure in health care has saved the lives of millions of people.

Through the Hand Hygiene Program of the Epidemiology Service of the Central Military Hospital, in the course of 2019 it has been possible to impact more than 1,500 people during the awareness sessions on handwashing. The first was from March 26 to April 9 and the second was held on May 2 and 3.

Washing your hands properly is necessary to avoid skin infections or gastrointestinal diseases, said Dr. Morayta Ramírez, head of the infectology service at the National Medical Center November 20.

“Everything we interact with every day is full of bacteria, a cell phone, for example, has 30 times more bacteria than a toilet, there are bacteria, viruses and disease-causing parasites,” said the pediatric infectologist in a release.

In the framework of the World Handwashing Day, which is celebrated on October 15, the specialist said that people are in daily contact with objects such as computer keyboards, ATMs, coins and bills, among other objects that are incubators of bacteria

“These can endanger our health if we do not have a proper cleaning habit in our hands. In fact, in one hand they have been able to identify between 104 and 109 different types of bacteria,” he said.

Children, especially when having outdoor activities, contact with animals, toys and other things have a higher risk of getting an infection such as diarrhea, which can be complicated due to dehydration.

“When a person does not wash their hands with soap and water, they can transmit bacteria, parasites and viruses, either by direct contact, that is, by touching another person, or indirectly, by touching surfaces,” he added.

That is why he asked for extreme care, washing his hands for at least a minute so that washing is efficient and reducing the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and doing it before, during and after preparing food, caring for someone sick, going to the bathroom, changing diapers , sneeze and touch pets.

“If, despite washing our hands, we notice some type of infection, it is important to see a doctor as this is the best way to identify the cause of our problem and determine the best treatment to solve it,” Morayta Ramírez concluded.

Hangzhou CDC created a hand-washing song – “hand hygiene style”, which will include “when to wash your hands”, “why should we wash our hands”, and “how to wash your hands properly” into the popular songs, let everyone sing Song has learned to wash hands scientifically and prevent bird flu.

Cao Chengjian, deputy director of the Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that the hands are most likely to be exposed to various pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. If these bacteria cannot be removed promptly and effectively, they may survive in the palms, finger joints, fingertips, etc. In hours, it may even continue to grow and multiply, becoming a place for pathogens to hide and reproduce. At this time, if the contaminated hand rubs the nose and rubs the eyes without cleaning, the bacteria on the hand will take advantage of it and easily enter the human body through the respiratory tract, the nasal mucosa, and the like.

Similarly, if you don’t wash your hands, you can take things, and the bacteria such as bacteria in your hands will be transferred to the food. Eating your stomach may also cause illness. Furthermore, before using the towel, the hands are not cleaned, and the bacteria on the hand are transferred to the towel. When the face is washed, the towel contacts the mucous membrane of the eye, the nasal mucosa, etc., and the bacteria will also enter the human body.

According to a large number of studies at home and abroad, hand washing can effectively eliminate the occurrence of various infectious diseases and prevent their spread. Therefore, hand washing is internationally recognized as the most effective and simplest way to prevent and control diseases such as acute respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, parasitic diseases (helicoses, etc.), eye infections (horizon), and skin infections (scorpions, etc.). The most economical method.

Coming here

Everyone comes to wash their hands together.

When do you want to wash your hands?

Go home, before and after meals

After shaking hands before holding the baby

When do you want to wash your hands?

After washing the doctor, wash your hands.

Wash your hands after doing housework

Do something to wash your hands

I have to touch the birds to wash my hands.

I have to sneeze to wash my hands.

We wash our hands for you

Keep away from bacteria and viruses

The disease will not follow

We wash our hands for you

Good hygiene and habits

Healthy civilization with you

How to properly wash your hands

Roll up the sleeves, wet hands

Rubbing soap, squeaking

Hand palm back with fingers

I don’t fall into one place

Wipe Wipe Wipe, Rub Rub Rub

Thirty seconds, no less

Bacterial viruses are washed away

Towel wipes dry hands

Come and come, everyone will wash their hands together.

Caring for life, starting from the heart, control infection, start from the hand.

Small bacteria are a big hazard! Busy work requires us to hate to become three-headed and six-armed or even incarnate in the hands of Guanyin.

While doing a good job, our hands often catch a variety of bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

Even super bacteria, which are clinically troublesome multi-drug resistant bacteria!

Then, take a look at our hands after the incarnation of Avalokitesvara! This is the case on the surface.

Office, hand shake, hygiene, germs, bacterial

Actually, it is like this

Do you know how many bacteria are in your hand? A person’s hand can hold more than 400,000 bacteria.

A large number of epidemiological data indicate that hospital infections are mostly transmitted directly or indirectly through contact, which is more dangerous than air transmission.

In daily life, the hand has the most chance of contact with other items, and the bacteria on the skin of the hand are more than the other parts of the body, both in type and in quantity.

bacterial in hands

When I saw such a picture, many people started to calm down.

? “I feel very disgusting!”

? “We usually see a cockroach, it feels so dirty and disgusting!”

“Oh, our hands, if you don’t wash your hands, it’s like holding an armpit!”

“When you bring so many bacteria to the patient, isn’t that the same as poisoning?”

It is estimated that washing up hands every year can save the lives of 1 million people who are sick.

The six-step hand washing method recommended by the World Health Organization can reduce the number of bacteria by 21%.

Strict implementation of correct hand washing rules can reduce hospital infections by 20%-30%

Then the problem is coming!

How to wash?

The seven-character slogan method makes it easy for you to start, “inside and outside the folder attacking the big pill”, it seems like the martial arts magic trick.

Have you washed your hands today?
